Value For Money : Excellent. It costs about 90 dollars at Guitar Center. I wanted a product that could record at 24 bit, as well as record audio and midi.
The software definitely records, audio, midi and 24 bit. The Home Studio getting started manual is very good. It tells you how to set up for midi and record tracks, as well as set up for audio and record audio tracks.
Suprisingly, I didn't find the audio quality much more amazing recording in 16 bit versus 24, possibly just more headroom before clipping for newbies, that when the audio level exceeds what the digital converters can handle, so you get crunches and crackles in your recording.
The most important factor to good audio recording is getting g…. The most important factor to good audio recording is getting good levels true both in audio and on tape, isnt that interesting? The Home Studio Getting Started manual is excellent, but pity it doesn't include a full manual telling you how to use all the features if you choose to try any of them.
The advanced features are documented in help files, which is more difficult to use then just cracking open a printed manual. Also, this software is not really suited to the beginner. I would say its more aimed at the intermediate to intermediate-advanced user who wants to get into recording audio guitars, vocals, bass etc as well as some midi. Also, this software has some advanced features like DXI synth haven't gone there yet , printing sheet music from midi which I heard doesn't work well, but havent tried it myself , as well as assembling drum loops etc.
For the serious home recording hobbiest, this software has lots of features to discover, so for months and months you won't feel like your bored or have covered everything you need to know. What do you have listed and selected for Input and Output drivers?
Go to Options-Audio-General. What do you have selected as your Record and Playback devices? The quality won't be very good. Are you in MME mode? Download the latest drivers for your operating system from SigmaTel. Could be. Windows XP is very particular about what drivers you use. Try the website for the company that made your laptop. Otherwise consider the Echo Indigo soundcard for your laptop.
Its a PC card. USB sound cards are too slow for audio work. Hi Dot, Did you ever resolve anything about your problem with SigmaTel?
I just bought Home Studio 2, and I have the exact same problem. I tried the same thing you did: did a search for the driver, and found the same message at SigmaTel's website that you saw, saying they don't do driver support. A further note, for any who are interested: the first thing I tried after installing Home Studio, was to load up one of the sample music files, and see if it would play.
I tried the file called "Let It Ride" which has both audio and midi. I got nothing out of midi or audio. Very discouraging! I had already verified my new midi cable works with Media Player.
Later, I tried opening another Home Studio file which has midi tracks only, and it played to the midi output. So it appears that when there is an audio track in the project, and my audio isn't working, Home Studio suppresses the the midi output as well, and doesn't tell me it's doing that!
But when the pointer hits the end of the last midi track, play stops. So clearly Home Studio recognizes it can't play the audio portion. But again, it's frustrating that it isn't giving any warning messages explaining what's going on, aside from the 1 message I get at program start-up. I will have to see if the Calkwalk people have any plans to address this problem. Audio drivers are fairly standard. It doesn't make sense for Cakewalk to be incompatible with sound cards that work fine with Windows Media Player.
Any comments or assistance will be appreciated! As stated before, the first thing I did when coming to this message board, was do a search on "Sigma Tel", and this was the only thread I got. Close the program and re-open it. The Wave Profiler should run tests.
