As a collaborative effort of several United Ways and other agencies, the project will encompass roles alleviating poverty through literacy programs, community awareness and volunteer resources for nonprofits. The VISTAs assigned to areas focused on Literacy will revolve around Kindergarten readiness and access to books and reading opportunities. VISTAs working on Healthy Futures will address food insecurity issues; and leveling the learning opportunities for homeless students through volunteer training.

Through capacity building activities such as fundraising, grant writing, research, and volunteer recruitment AmeriCorps members in the VISTA program serve in an office setting and gain experience and leadership skills.
This opportunity prepares members for a life of service in the public, private, or nonprofit sector. They build capacity in nonprofit organizations and public agencies to help them more effectively generate the commitment of private sector resources, encourage volunteer service at the local level, and empower individuals and communities.
